International Day of Women and Girls in Science
International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated annually on February 11, starting from 2016, by the decision of the United Nations.
On December 20, 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution “Science, Technology and
Innovation for Development”, which recognized the equal and full access of women and girls of any age to the achievements and development of science, technology and innovation as a guarantee of ensuring gender equality in this area. And two years later, at another plenary session of the General Assembly, a resolution (70/212) was adopted, declaring February 11 the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The establishment of the new date is another milestone in the implementation of the 2030 plan for the development of society, known as the UN General Assembly resolution “Transforming our world: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.
The first celebration of the day took place on February 11, 2016 and was marked by a forum at the UN headquarters. The annual celebration of this day is intended to draw additional attention to the issue of women’s participation in the scientific field, especially to celebrate the achievements in science, technology and innovation made by women and girls.
The holiday is celebrated not only by women but also by girls and aimed at actualize the topic of participation in scientific communities, circles and other associations of the scientific profile of the school period of study not only of boys, but also of girls, whose participation is also noticeably lower.
